I have counted calories many times as an adult and can honestly say I hate it! It’s worth it to lose weight but I find it so depressing to have to keep track of every bite or nibble I take as well as cut out so many foods.
About 6 months ago I read a book called, “How to Have Your Cake and Your Skinny Jeans Too,” by Josie Spinardi. The title sounded pretty wonderful to me – cake… yum…
I was about three months post partum with Jack. I know it takes time to lose the baby weight but I had hit a slump. Nursing supposedly peels off the pounds but that peeling must have stopped about then.
I weighed 16 pounds more than when I found out I was pregnant.
The book’s premise is intuitive eating. Eating when you’re hungry, stopping when you’re full AND you get to eat whatever you want! You can even eat cake for breakfast!
It sounded sooo easy so why can’t I do that by myself?
Spinardi describes many different eating situations that really struck a cord with me. I needed to stop eating when I wasn’t hungry!
I decided to test this book out. It takes a little getting used to but it helps to know you aren’t banned from eating anything. “If I don’t eat the entire cake right now then I can eat 10 pieces for the next couple days as long as I’m hungry.”
And guess what!? It worked! I started losing weight. I lost 15 pounds! And then… I’m not going to lie – I did well at Thanksgiving but by my third Christmas celebration I started to lose it. Sigh… those holidays are cruel! I gained back 5.
In February I got a Fitbit, which I love by the way. It’s pretty much a fancy pedometer but it is so encouraging to see how many steps you take in a day and the calories you are burning. I had forgotten about the intuitive eating and started counting those darn calories again. I lost a few pounds and got back to my pre-holiday weight, plateaued for a week, hit that pig-out time of the month and just wanted to lay on my couch drinking lattes and eating cupcakes.
Then I suddenly remembered the book and read it all over again while slurping a milkshake on the couch. Didn’t get my 10,000 steps that day…
BUT I did get my mojo back. It took a little time but here I am back to my intuitive eating self. I am 1.4 pounds away from having lost 20 pounds – while still drinking the occasional latte and currently a tagalong cookie bar. I am .4 ounces away from that lower weight bracket I want to be in now… the 140s!
