With little kids it can be hard to think of things to do as a family. In some ways it’s easy because they love going to the park or on a walk but sometimes it’s nice to have a bigger plan and to do some new things. This being said I am really enjoying these little holiday celebrations because they give some good ideas to start with.

In honor of Donald Duck’s Birthday we decided to celebrate in a few different ways. We started with a snack of cheese and “quackers” with Jeffrey – he only ate the cheese… hmm… I think he’s on to something…

Then we went in search of ducks! We weren’t allowed to feed them but we did get to follow them around and enjoy the sunshine. 0313151157[1]I am borrowing my mom’s awesome camera and I was so excited to take some nice pictures of my boys – of course once we got there I realized I had taken out the memory card. I hate that! I immediately felt so irritated. The peace I had with my little family in the sunshine was gone so quickly.

I went from excited to doom and gloom. I was on the verge of vocalizing my thoughts to my husband, “I am so mad, this just ruined my day” when suddenly a verse popped into my head:

“…whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8

Don’t get me wrong… It didn’t pop into my head verbatim but key words did… “whatever things are true” “lovely” and “praiseworthy!”

What is true is I have two beautiful boys and a wonderful hubby to enjoy the outdoors with whether I have a nice camera or not. What is lovely is the sun shining on the water as Jeffrey excitedly searched for ducks.

What was praiseworthy is that God made all these things and blessed me with the eyes to see and the ears to hear what was around me – as well as the conviction that my negative thoughts could ruin a wonderful time.  I let that anger go and chose to be thankful for a phone with a camera to capture a few precious moments.

I did get a little mad when I dumped a bunch of water in my lap on the drive home though – I’m still working on this positive thinking stuff!

I had been trying to figure out what Donald Duck’s favorite food was when I came across the site bakingbites.com. I had never heard of this before but there is an old show called Chef Donald that we proceeded to find on YouTube. In the 7.5 minute clip it shows Donald attempting to make waffles as Mother Mallard calls out the recipe. Donald accidentally puts rubber cement instead of baking powder so as you might guess a bunch of mishaps occur. On the website bakingbites.com the exact recipe for Old Mother Mallard’s Waffles is provided from the show and conveniently cut in half for a smaller meal.

We followed the recipe listed and enjoyed those for lunch! Yes that was the second time we had waffles this week but it was too fun to pass up!
